Teachers

Yvonne Mayer and Jim Heaney founded Our School Preschool along with a few parents in 1973. As a team, they have functioned as teachers and directors for over thirty years.

Yvonne’s background is in French and English literature; Jim’s is in architecture and psychology. Both switched their focus to early childhood studies before starting Our School. Their backgrounds, combined with their knowledge of child development and related studies, give them an especially broad view of subject matter relating to young children. They are also certified by the Colorado State of Human Services.

In addition to their work with children, Yvonne and Jim are dedicated to educating and supporting parents, giving workshops on topics to address parents’ needs and interests. See the Calendar for a schedule of Events. They have also given workshops for teachers on an array of subject matter, including math and science, construction with blocks, discipline book making and more.

In the past, Jim and Yvonne were connected with the staff of Mountain View Center for Environmental Studies, directed by Dr. David Hawkins at the University of Colorado. The center was a place for preschool to fifth grade teachers to learn. Yvonne has taught in all areas of the early childhood education curriculum at Red Rocks and Front Range Community Colleges with Jim assisting in many of them. They have published several articles on early childhood issues in Outlook, an educational magazine (now out of print) and the Parenting Connection of Boulder.

“It is not the role of the mother or the therapist or the peer, but one who values the learner and learning professionally... and wants the child to regain and develop his/her capacity to probe and test, to summon (their sleeping resources for imagery, control and understand: to learn, not memorize.”

- Frances Pockman Hawkins, speaking of the role of the teacher in her book, The Logic of Action.
